Go behind the scenes with Celebrity Cruises Travel Ambassador Nate Berkus as he gives you an inside look of what went into creating the most anticipated ship of the year, Celebrity Edge.
It all started in 2016 when a team of renowned architects, engineers, and designers set out to build a game-changing ship that would completely reimagine the cruise experience.
From the beginning, Celebrity Edge set a new standard in the industry, as it was the first ship to be fully designed using 3-D technology.
A masterpiece in engineering, Celebrity Edge’s construction shifted the traditional ship layout from an exoskeleton layout to an outward-facing endoskeleton design, allowing the creation of staterooms with Infinite Verandas, which not only provide breathtaking views of the ocean but are 23% larger than Celebrity’s current veranda staterooms.
Kelly Hoppen helmed the interior design of The Retreat, Celebrity’s suite experience, and of each of the staterooms on board. Her goal was to create a luxurious setting that would feel comfortable and inviting as soon as you walked in.
Designers Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku designed the Grand Plaza, an open, three-story venue inspired by Italian piazzas and the heart of Celebrity Edge. The star of the Grand Plaza is the chandelier in the center, which features over 3,200 feet of LED lights.
Cornelius Gallager, Celebrity Cruises’ Associate VP of Food and Beverage, oversaw the menu offerings in the four main dining rooms on Celebrity Edge, including Tuscan Restaurant and its modern Italian food; Normandie, which features sophisticated French cuisine; Cosmopolitan Restaurant and its global-influenced dishes; and The Cyrus Restaurant, which features Mediterranean cuisine.
One of Celebrity Edge’s most revolutionary spaces is Eden, a stunning three-deck venue wrapped in over 7,000 feet of glass. Architect Scott Butler and interior designer Patricia Urquiola collaborated to create this green oasis, where guests can rest while looking out into the ocean, enjoy afternoon cocktails with garnishes picked from Eden’s library of plants, and enjoy dinner and a thrilling show by performers called Edenists at night.
On the deck, architect Tom Wright created an outdoor paradise with ocean-facing lounge chairs, a 25-foot lap pool, private cabanas, elevated hot tubs, and a rooftop garden.
Wright was also the visionary behind Celebrity Edge’s incredible Magic Carpet, the first cantilevered floating platform in the world.
After completing a float out in January 2018 and making its way to Fort Lauderdale in November 2018, the Celebrity Edge celebrated its naming ceremony with Celebrity Edge’s godmother, Malala Yousefzadeh, and was officially ready to set off on its inaugural sailing.
Four years after starting construction on the Celebrity Edge, the ship made its first voyage out to sea in December 2018.
